Choice is a Superpower

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I love super-hero movies. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved cartoons, comic books and now epic movies about people with incredible powers. I love the idea that a regular person could have some secret power that could allow them to do incredible things.

I believe that God has given each of us a superpower when He created us to have free will. Even though we cannot fly, become invisible on command or have superhuman strength, we do have the power of choice. No matter what is going on in our lives, we always have the power to choose how we are going to respond. What we choose determines the life we live.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing how the power of choice affects our thoughts, forgiveness and how we heal. When we embrace this superpower it sets us apart from the average and puts us on the road toward an extraordinary life.

As I have gotten older, I have realized that the worst thing in the world is feeling like a victim—a powerless person or a Spectator—who can only observe what’s happening to them. Their only recourse is to blame others, their circumstances, or even the devil, and wait for their season to change. In studying God’s word, the concept of stewardship was so empowering. It helped me realize that I always have a choice. I can wield my choice in how I show up in any circumstance. I can act, react or respond to any situation.

There have been many times when I’ve failed in my life. I didn’t get into my dream law school, I failed the bar the first time, I didn’t become a judge the first time I tried and I had many failed relationships before I got married at 53 years old. Every time I failed, I could have given up. Whenever I was treated unfairly, I was well within my rights to blame others. However, I had to choose whether or not I was going to wallow in anger, resentment and self-pity—or forgive. Our choices determine the course and trajectory of our lives. If there is any area of your life that is not going the way you want it to, remember you can wield your superpower and change it!

Presiding Action

Think about all the areas of your life. First, make a list and be grateful for all of the things that are going well. Now, think about an area that you would like to improve. It could be your health, your career, a relationship. You are one choice away from having the life you want. Even if it’s an area you can’t change right now, you can choose to change the way you think about it or the way you respond to it. Have you been proactive in this area or are you waiting for something/someone else to change? Are you reacting out of fear, anger or doubt? Could you instead respond with love and faith in knowing that all things are working for your good? You always have a choice.
